What the valve is for Community tip

Hartrusion describes the RAVE as the part that lets an engine built around a resonance pipe still pull at lower rpm, by moving a blade in the exhaust port. Cable free play in Haynes is 0.5 mm. That is a service figure, not a tuning target.

A seized solenoid is already recorded as a bee-tail fault. Look at the valve before you blame the carburettor for a flat spot.

Opening speed Community tip

Hartrusion’s tuning page says the opening speed has to suit the pipe and the cylinder. If a pipe moves the resonance up, an opening speed of 8,000 rpm can be too early, and the sign is a dip just after the valve opens.

The speeds he lists for the electronic controller: 7,100 rpm and 7,300 rpm on a Pegaso 125 unit, 7,800 rpm and 8,000 rpm on the standard unit, and 8,400 rpm and 8,600 rpm on an SP unit. In each pair the higher figure is the unit with the bridge fitted, and 8,000 rpm with the bridge is the standard setting he names. This site does not describe how to bridge a plug or how to swap a unit.

He says aftermarket blades, and he names a Michelotto blade, can sit closer to the piston when shut and flush with the port when open. He does not claim a measured gain. A gain from a different blade is To verify.

Removal, and pneumatic replacements Disputed/needs checking

The derestriction notes say a restricted bike may have a blanking plate where the RAVE blade should be. Putting the blade back is undoing that restriction. It is not a separate power trick, and which codes left the factory with a plate is To verify on the bike.

Taking a working valve off, and leaving the port open or blanked as a tuning choice, has no measured gain in the sources used here. Hartrusion’s account of pneumatic replacements, including a pneumatic RAVE2 and an Italkit pneumatic unit, is that they are not a power increase. They can cost power. The advantage he describes is that you do not need the electronic parts, and that the blade moves more slowly. A claim that deleting the valve adds power stays Disputed/needs checking.

Legal and safety. The valve is also part of how these bikes were restricted. Changing it can move the bike out of the 11 kW class. Read the derestriction page and the UK law page before you remove a plate or a controller.
